Second Saturday Serve

2014 to 2015

13 Sep 2014:

Foundation participated in a volunteer work-day in Historical Jerusalem Mill Village. Among the activities included: (1) preparation of corn-husk dolls for Park Quest 2014; (2) painting of the new gate, fence and windows of the Tenant House/Post Office; (3) over 2 acres of grass was cut, including trimming; (4) the native Maryland Garden behind the McCourtney's General Store was cleared of weeds and new plants added, and other preparations for winter was made; (5) The doors of the Grist Mill and Gun Factory were scrapped, primed and painted, (6) Removal of brush and weeds blocking no-name stream, and, (7) re-pointing of bankbarn stones walls (see attached pictures below).

 

 

 9 Aug 2014: 

Mountain Christian Church to work Second Saturday Serve at historical Jerusalem Mill for a work day. After a feast prepared by Saint Joan Scovill and others the volunteers started the following activities: (1) Split firewood for the living history open hearth cooking and Colonial Craftsman’s Weekend; (2) Painted both the Springhouse and Paddock bridges; (3) Prepared miniature flour sacks for Park Quest/War of 1812 Living History activities; (4) Cleared dead locust tree from picnic area next to Blacksmith Shop, and, (5) Cut grass/weed-wacked around McCourtney’s Store, Tenant House and Paddock (see attached pictures below). 

 

12 Jul 2014: 

Saint Stephens and Mountain Christian Church to work Second Saturday Serve at historical Jerusalem Mill for a work day. After a feast prepared by Saint Joan Scovill and others the volunteers started the following activities: (1) weeded the native plants garden behind the McCourtney’s General Store, (2) painted the porch of the tenant house, (3) split firewood for the Gunshop open hearth cooking, (4) repaired erosion damage on Little Gunpowder Trail from recent rains; (5) re-painted the antique baseball scoreboard; (6) finished painting donated farm hayrack and scaffolding, and, (7) removed nails from donated timbers from Axial Belko Plant. 

 

14 Jun 2014:

Wilson, Nat Perry and Kevin Parry); eight (8) volunteers from the Friends of Jerusalem Mill, four (4) volunteers from the Percy Lee Dairy Farm Foundation joined fifteen (15) volunteers from the Mountain Christian Church (total of twenty-seven) to work the Second Saturday Serve at the Historical Jerusalem Mill Village. After a feast prepared by Saint Joan Scovill and others the volunteers started the following activities: (1) emptying the basement of McCourtney’s General Store of donated material; (2) fixing the clogged sump pump; (3) painting the Farm Wagon for the 4 th of July Parade; (4) splitting firewood for the living history hearth cooking class at noon, and, (5) painting both front porches of the Tenant Farmer’s/Post Office (see attached pictures below).

10 May 2014:

volunteers from Mountain Christian Church Second Saturday Serve, Maryland Conservation Corp (Sean Campbell), Cub Pack 877 (fifteen cub scouts and six adult leaders hosted by Susan Wooden and Art Benser), walk-on and other volunteers on Saturday, 10 May 2014. After a hardy feast by Saint Joan Scovill and Andrea Staschak, the volunteers completed several activities: (1) Susan and Art lead the activity to finish painting the colonial garden fence behind the gun/copper shop; (2) spread ground cloth and stone on the driveway at McCourtney’s General Store; (3) Remove a rotten stump and install a new oak base for the central anvil in the blacksmith shop; (4) Clear sand and storm debris from Grist/Lumber Mill tail race caused by the heavy rain fall; (5) Paint several hundred feet of three board fence within the village; (6) clear fallen branches and trees caused by the heavy rain fall including branches from behind the bank barn, and, (7) Set up overflow parking area in Klages’s Field.
